SJ Powell is a speculative writer based in Providence, RI. Encompassing science-fiction, fantasy, and horror, their fiction investigates the cultivation of personhood in the dark by fugitives from humanity. Their stories sow unruly conceptions of being, materality, and affinity. How can fiction help us enter the greater-than-human world? They are a suburban naturalist and a bird lover.
Their fiction has been published in FIYAH Lit Magazine, Fusion Fragment, Cosmic Horror Monthly, and elsewhere. Their work has been supported by the Hubbard Hutchinson Memorial Fellowship, City Books’ Writers-in-Residence Program, the Bischoff Inn, the Hurston/Wright Foundation, Tin House, and the Wassaic Project Residency.
